About the event

Juneteenth

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is celebrated on June 19th each year. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The day marks the anniversary of the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, which proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas, the last holdout of slavery in the U.S.

Significance of Juneteenth

  • Emancipation: Juneteenth symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States.

  • Reflection and Education: It serves as a time for reflection on the struggles and achievements of African Americans.
